Training: 

  • Degree in Archaeology from the University of Lisbon (2002), followed by a specialization in Geoarchaeology from the Geology Department of the University of Lisbon.
  • PhD from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, USA (2012).
  • Post-doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig (Germany) between 2013-2017, before returning to Portugal in 2017. 

Academic and professional activity: 

  • Coordinating Researcher at the University of the Algarve. In her research work, she applies geological and archaeological techniques to reconstruct ancient environments and the history of human adaptations. Her professional career is the result of an interdisciplinary academic background that crosses the fields of archaeological anthropology and geosciences.
  • Group leader at the Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and the Evolution of Human Behavior (ICArEHB), at the University of Algarve (UAlg), in Portugal. 
  • Principal Investigator of ERC Starting Grant MATRIX since 2022, which aims to investigate the interactions between hominins of the past, namely Neanderthals and Anatomically Modern Humans, through the analysis of the sedimentary record and the extraction of molecular and microscopic information stored in archaeological sites.
