Guest country

Spain, guest country of the Science 2023 Meeting

Spain is the guest country of Science 2023. The event will be attended by the Minister of Science and Innovation of Spain, Diana Morant, and have a solid participation of Spanish researchers invited by Portuguese entities, forestalling a closer cooperation in different areas of research and development:

  • Eva Calvo, Institute of Marine Sciences
  • Mariona Claret, Institute of Marine Sciences
  • Juan Lema, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela
  • Rosa Chapela, CETMAR
  • Lorenzo Pastrana, Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory
  • Octavi Quintana Trias, PRIMA

Relations between Portugal and Spain go beyond the classic bilateral framework. This is because the density and intensity of the relationship between the two neighbouring countries – historically, geographically and culturally linked with a similar international journey and a large common border – is reflected in all areas.

The Portuguese-Spanish Summits, launched in 1983 with Mário Soares and Felipe González, constitute the dialogue mechanism par excellence on which the development of the bilateral agenda is based.

The 2021 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, which updates that of 1977, noted the desire to move towards an even greater understanding between Spain and Portugal, deepening their cooperation in the European Union but giving pride of place to the Iberian dimension.

The synergy between the governmental areas of science, technology, innovation and higher education has been reinforced in those Summits and currently both countries develop several initiatives and projects in areas such as space, semiconductors, green hydrogen, nanotechnology, among others, always aiming to promote science, technology and innovation on both sides of the borders.

I believe that the Science 2023 Meeting will prove to be another opportunity to bring us closer and to continue developing Portuguese and Spanish science, internationalising it and making it more and more decisive in the European and worldwide economic and technological development.
